'Genome Biotechnology - An Option For NZ Dairy Farmers' (Dairy Farmers Conference 2002, Proceedings)

A paper on ViaLactia's strategy appeared in the Ruakura Dairy Farmers Conference Proceedings (2002). The abstract:

Genome biotechnology is a relatively new speciality of science with a potential to revolutionise many industries, including the global dairy industry. It is too powerful a technology to ignore and the Fonterra owned biotechnology company ViaLactia is ensuring that dairy farmers will have an option to use it if dairy farmers and their customers want it. The New Zealand dairy farmers’ low cost position and therefore their livelihoods largely depend on the ryegrass and clover genomes. The ViaLactia forage team is looking at ways of capturing the full natural potential of these plant species through the unique and exciting combination of its in house world class scientists with the use of the best available technologies together with international research providers. Through its gene discovery strategy ViaLactia has limited competitor access to the ryegrass genome in order to at least slow down its use by offshore dairy industries.
