Optimum®

Optimum® is a gene which optimises the milk characteristics rewarded under New Zealand's payment system - it increases milk fat and protein, while decreasing milk volume. Optimum® has been licensed by BoviQuest for commercialisation to Livestock Improvement, and its use in breeding and milk production has been patented.

Please contact info@vialactia.com for further details.

Quantum®

Quantum® is a gene which has a major effect on milk yield. The favourable allele increases protein and milk volume, and decreases fat. This gene is currently being commercialised through BoviQuest. Its use in breeding and milk production has been patented.

Clover Database

Pastoral Genomics also wishes to encourage further academic research into the enhancement of clover by making the tools and databases freely available to the New Zealand academic research community.

Ryegrass Molecular Map

ViaLactia and the Institute for Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) in Wales have established a map of the ryegrass genome. The map is a tool which will accelerate the breeding of new varieties of ryegrass.

In the past, breeding has been largely based on observing the traits of many plants and interbreeding those plants with desirable characteristics many times over several years with established varieties to produce the best mix of features. Molecular breeding using the VLB-IGER ryegrass marker map involves better, more 'real' trait measurement and faster, surer interbreeding to get the right mix. The aggregation of ViaLactia's genomic tools and the quantitative molecular agronomy work at IGER has created a platform for the production of superior forages over the next few years.
