The focus of the bovine team is to discover genetic markers and genes which will impact the profitability and genetic gain of dairy cows, creating sustainable wealth for shareholders and Fonterra. This is achieved through leading-edge bovine genomics research, innovative technology, use of data from alliances and publicly available sources, and rapid gene dissemination. Currently, we are licensing two genes, Quantum® and Optimum®, for use in the New Zealand dairy industry.
BoviQuest
Part of ViaLactia's bovine business is performed through BoviQuest,
a joint venture between ViaLactia Biosciences and Livestock
Improvement Corporation (LIC).
ViaLactia's expertise in bovine genomics, including gene discovery,
associated function definition and molecular biology is complemented
by LIC's well developed skills in bovine genetics and inheritance
patterns. LIC is also a valuable source of well defined and tested
bovine germplasm.
Our combined expertise, together with the germplasm and associated
database of linked heritage, production and phenotypic data is an
essential starting point for BoviQuest's gene discovery programme.
