Biological innovation is a key component for developing our economy.

It is indisputable that the advances made in biotechnology during the past few decades can benefit New Zealand's economy.

New Zealand's economy is based on agriculture and agricultural innovation. Continuous improvement is the only way to maintain and protect the economic position of New Zealand's primary industries. As a result ViaLactia has released its first products: genotyping tests for dairy cattle to facilitate traditional breeding and selection.

ViaLactia endorses the conclusions of the 2002 Royal Commission on Genetic Modification which is leading to the creation of the most rigorous regulatory regime in the world for certain biotechnologies.

ViaLactia's research focus is on CISGENIC® applications of genome information. Improvements to dairy stock and pasture will be made by moving genes within species using marker-assisted traditional breeding or more advanced techniques. This is in contrast to transgenic approaches, where genes are moved between species using only high-tech methods.
